Being overweight has been linked to various health problems like diabetes and heart disease. However, very few people realize that obesity also affects the quality and the production of sperm cells.
In a large-scale study involving 1940 men to the researchers found, as well as women whose weight is excessive, men who are overweight also have a smaller chance to be parents because they are a little amount of sperm.
The researchers collected semen samples of volunteers and then measured the body mass index (BMI) as an indicator of their obesity. Men who IMT was 18.5 to 25 categorized as normal, including the BMI 23 to 24.9 overweight, and above 25 considered obese.
The higher the excess weight, the lower the sperm quality, especially in men who fall into the category of obesity.
"Obesity will lead to modifications of sperm characteristics are due to hormonal disturbances that make the quality, quantity and reduced sperm vitality," said Paul-Cohen Bacrie, scientific director of the network of European laboratories in his presentation at the meeting of the European Fertility Meeting.
Men who are overweight have a sperm count 10 percent lower, while the men classified as obese in number 20 percent less. Addition of a group of obese men found the number of men who have sperm levels of zero to four times more than in the group of men with normal weight.
